YOUTH INVOLVEMENT
The Youth Involvement Unit is an element of the Field Operations Division’s Community Relations Section.
The Youth Involvement Unit is further subdivided into four divisions, the Do the Right Thing Program,
the Police Athletic League Program, the Police Explorer Program, and the School Resource Officer Detail.
VISION
The vision of the Miami Police Athletic League is to expand our athletic programs to continue to
meet our diverse communities’ needs, enhance our mentoring programs and to increase our youth’s
academic intellect by applying new and innovative interdisciplinary approaches
MISSION
The mission of the Miami Police Athletic League, Inc. (Miami PAL) is to foster a positive relationship
the Miami Police Department and the youth of the City of Miami through educational activities, athletics
and mentorship. Miami PAL offers a safe and healthy environment for its youth, allowing them to develop
academically, socially, mentally and physically, under the supervision of caring Miami PAL staff. Through
positive interactions and mentoring, Miami PAL provides the youth with the tools they need in order to achieve
a successful future, whilst preventing juvenile delinquency.
The Miami Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) is a nonprofit agency that provides an intensive recreational
and educational program for youngsters ages 5-18 to prevent our youth’s exposure to negative neighborhood
influences. P.A.L. encourages inner-city children from elementary through high school graduation to utilize
their free time after school and on weekends developing skills in sports and academics. The objective of P.A.L.
is simple: Filling Playgrounds, Not Prisons by bringing the youth of Miami and City of Miami Police Officers together.
Students involved in the P.A.L. program are engaged in sports such as basketball, flag football, tackle football,
cheerleading, track and field, martial arts, and wrestling. We also have a wonderful dance program and a police
explorer program. The police explorer program provides high school and college students insight into a career
in law enforcement. P.A.L.'s diversified activities provide opportunities for every child in this city, regardless
of their abilities to participate and compete.
Miami P.A.L. recently added STEM to after school programs to encourage education in science, technology engineering
and math to aid in future career decisions. Miami PAL also supports after-school homework clubs, and Summer programs
supplemented by substance abuse education and good citizenship activities. Students are also exposed to many of the
cultural and sports outlets around South Florida through the many field trips planned especially for them. Police
officers and youth counselors accompany participants to professional games, cultural and educational events that give
them a broader perspective of their community.
